How to Test Switch Life: Complete Methods and Acceptance Criteria

From equipment setup to result analysis — complete guide to tact switch life testing procedures, key parameter settings and failure criteria.

1Step 1: Prepare Test Equipment

  1. Select appropriate life tester

    Use electromagnetic or pneumatic driven button life tester supporting programmable press speed (1-5Hz), travel and force. Ensure sensor accuracy meets ±2% requirement.

  2. Configure monitoring instruments

    Connect contact resistance monitor (4-wire method, 1mΩ resolution), oscilloscope (monitor conduction waveform) and data acquisition system. Set sampling interval per 1000-10000 cycles.

2Step 2: Set Test Parameters

  1. Set press speed

    Standard test speed: 2-3 cycles/sec (120-180 CPM). Accelerated testing can use 5 cycles/sec but doesn't represent actual conditions. IEC 60512 recommended speed.

  2. Set press travel

    Set travel at 1.2-1.5x rated travel to ensure full activation. Too small travel may cause rebound without triggering, affecting accuracy.

  3. Configure load conditions

    No-load test (dry circuit): suitable for signal switches. Loaded test: apply rated current (e.g., 10mA @ 5V DC). Results are not directly comparable between the two.

3Step 3: Execute Testing & Record Data

  1. Initial baseline measurement

    Before starting measure each sample's initial actuation force (FP), rebound force (RP), contact resistance (CR). Record ambient temperature and humidity.

  2. Periodic inspection

    At 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% of total life target stop for inspection: visual check, measure FP/RP/CR change, record anomalies.

  3. Record failure events

    Immediately record cycle count and failure mode upon any conduction failure, excessive force increase (>30% change), mechanical jamming or visual damage.

4Step 4: Analysis & Determination

  1. Calculate pass rate / MTTF

    Calculate proportion of samples reaching target life without failure. Compute MTTF (Mean Time To Failure) and Weibull characteristic life η.

  2. Failure mode classification

    Classify all failures: contact wear (most common), spring fatigue, terminal fracture, housing cracking, pad detachment. Distribution reveals design weaknesses.

  3. Issue test report

    Report should include: test condition summary, raw data curves, statistical analysis results, failure photos, conclusions and recommendations. Format must meet customer QA system requirements.
