Mechanical test items

Mechanical reliability is the connector's first line of defense. Key tests include mating cycle durability (IEC 60512-5), terminal retention (EIA-364-29), vibration (IEC 60068-2-6), shock (IEC 60068-2-27) and flexure (EIA-364-41). Test conditions and criteria vary by application domain.

Mating durability: 500-10000 cycles, ΔR < 50% initial
Terminal retention: ≥3N (signal)/ ≥8N (power)
Vibration: 10-500Hz/1.5mm/2hr/axis, no momentary interruption
Shock: 30g/6ms half-sine, 6 times per axis

Environmental adaptability testing

Environmental tests verify connector stability under extreme conditions. Core items include thermal cycling (IEC 60068-2-14), damp heat storage (IEC 60068-2-78), salt spray (IEC 60068-2-52), mixed gas (IEC 60068-2-60) and thermal shock (IEC 60068-2-14). Automotive-grade connectors must also meet USCAR-2 additional requirements.

Thermal cycling: -40°C to +85°C / 1000 cycles / no visual damage
Damp heat: 85°C / 85%RH / 168h / ΔR < 50%
Salt spray: 5% NaCl / 35°C / 48-96h / no base corrosion
Mixed gas: SO₂+NO₂+H₂S / 10 days / contact functional

How to select test matrix by application

Not all connectors need full testing. Indoor office devices only need basic mating cycle and thermal cycling; outdoor base stations must do salt spray + UV aging; automotive needs USCAR-2 complete matrix (including LV214); medical devices need biocompatibility testing. Identify applicable industry standards early to tailor the test plan.
