Test conditions determine result comparability

Tact switch life test results are affected by press speed, travel setting, load current and ambient temperature. Results from different test conditions are not directly comparable. Standard tests typically run at 2-3 cycles per second at room temperature, with travel set to 1.5x rated travel.

Press speed: typically 2-3 cycles/second
Travel: 1.5x rated travel
Load: no-load or loaded test

Failure criteria

Common failure criteria include: contact resistance exceeding 2x initial value, actuation force changing more than 30% from initial, visible cracks or deformation, and conduction failure rate exceeding specified limits. Confirm criteria with the supplier before testing.

Failure mode analysis drives improvement

Post-test failure mode analysis helps identify root causes. Common modes include contact wear, spring fatigue, terminal fracture and pad detachment. Analysis guides material selection, structural optimization and process improvement.
