IP rating digit meanings
IP ratings consist of two digits. The first (0-6) indicates dust protection, with 6 being dust-tight. The second (0-9) indicates water protection: 4 is splash-resistant, 7 allows temporary immersion, 8 allows continuous immersion, and 9K resists high-pressure high-temperature water. Common switch ratings are IP40, IP67 and IP68.

Environmental factors to consider
Higher IP ratings are not always better — match the rating to the use case. Outdoor equipment typically needs IP67+, indoor consumer electronics can use IP40, and kitchen/bathroom appliances may need IP54. Excessive waterproofing adds cost and structural complexity.

How waterproofing affects switch performance
Waterproof switches typically use seals or potting, which affects actuation force, travel and tactile feel. Waterproof models usually have 20-50% higher actuation force. Reserve sufficient travel and force margin during design.
